Moving out of a rental in Janesville? A little planning saves money on the move and helps you get your full security deposit back. Use this checklist from 30 days out to move-out day.

30 Days Before You Move

  • Read your lease. Check the move-out notice requirement, end date, and any cleaning or carpet rules.

  • Give written notice. Wisconsin month-to-month tenancies generally require written notice at least 28 days before the next rent due date. Fixed-term leases follow the lease. Deliver it in person or by certified mail and keep a copy.

  • Book your movers. Weekday moves (Monday–Thursday) cost less and are easier to schedule, especially at the end of the month.

  • Find your check-in sheet. The condition report you filled out when you moved in helps prove which damage was already there.

  • Start decluttering. Every item you don't move is time you don't pay for.

2–3 Weeks Before

  • Collect boxes and supplies: boxes, tape, markers, and stretch wrap.

  • Pack what you don't use daily: seasonal clothes, books, decor, and storage items.

  • Ask about moving rules. Some Janesville apartment complexes have move-in and move-out hours, elevator reservations, or parking rules for trucks.

  • Get rid of junk. Old furniture, mattresses, and anything you're not taking. Leaving items behind can come out of your deposit. Our Janesville junk removal crew can haul it away.

1 Week Before

  • Change your address with USPS, your bank, your employer, and the Wisconsin DMV.

  • Schedule utilities. In Janesville, gas and electric are through Alliant Energy, and water is through the Janesville Water Utility. Set a shut-off date at your old place and a start date at the new one.

  • Transfer internet and schedule installation at your new place.

  • Confirm your move time and give the crew any gate codes or parking notes.

Moving Day

  • Have everything packed and taped before the crew arrives

  • Keep a "first night" bag with chargers, medications, toiletries, documents, and keys

  • Do a final walk-through of every closet, cabinet, and the storage unit

Before You Hand Over the Keys

  • Clean the fridge, stove, bathrooms, and floors.

  • Take dated photos and video of every room after it's empty and clean.

  • Return all keys and get a receipt if you can.

  • Give your landlord a forwarding address in writing.

Getting Your Security Deposit Back

In Wisconsin, landlords generally must return your deposit, or give you an itemized list of deductions, within 21 days after you move out. They can deduct for things like unpaid rent and damage beyond normal wear and tear, but not for normal wear and tear itself. For details, see the Wisconsin DATCP's Tenants' Rights and Responsibilities guide.
